TMJ & Bruxism

Understanding TMJ Disorders and Bruxism
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders and bruxism (teeth grinding) are common conditions that can cause significant discomfort and impact your overall oral health. At Dameron Family Dental, we specialize in diagnosing and treating TMJ disorders and bruxism to help you find relief and improve your quality of life.

What Is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jawbone to your skull and allows you to open and close your mouth. TMJ disorders occur when this joint becomes inflamed or misaligned, causing pain and dysfunction.

Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorders:
  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Clicking or popping sounds when moving the jaw
  • Limited jaw movement or stiffness
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Earaches or ringing in the ears
  • Pain while chewing or biting
Causes of TMJ Disorders:
  • Jaw injury or trauma
  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
  • Misalignment of the teeth or bite
  • Arthritis or other inflammatory conditions

What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism refers to the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, often occurring during sleep. It can lead to wear and damage to the teeth and other oral structures.

Common Symptoms of Bruxism:
  • Worn-down or chipped teeth
  • Jaw pain or muscle soreness
  • Headaches or earaches
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Damage to dental restorations
Causes of Bruxism:
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Misaligned teeth or bite
  • Sleep disorders
  • Certain medications or substances

Diagnosis:
To accurately diagnose TMJ disorders and bruxism, we conduct a thorough examination, which may include:
  • Reviewing your medical and dental history
  • Assessing your jaw function and alignment
  • Performing X-rays or other imaging studies
